Ressence is a neologism blending the words “renaissance” and “essence.” Renaissance stands for the rebirth of what is essential to a watch, to display time. Ressence is a contemporary iteration of time representation, using the same universal cognitive patterns we learn and then imprint to read time on a traditional watch.

The Ressence logo is a universal symbol of humanism, the hand. The hand is oriented horizontally, reaching out. As such, the watch sends out a strong message about the mindset of the owner.

The hand is also the icon of the world harbour city, Antwerp, where Ressence watches are made. According to ancient lore, Antwerpen is a neologism of “ant” and “werpen,” respectively “hand” and “throwing” in Dutch Legend has it that 3,000 years ago, there was a giant called Druon Antigoon. He was so tall that he would stand with one foot on each bank of the river Scheldt. Sailors and merchants had no choice but to give money to be allowed to navigate the waters he ruled.

A Ressence dial gives a contemporary interpretation to what has always been considered dogma in watchmaking, the hands of the dial.

The avant-garde design distinguishes itself through minimalism and timelessness, approximating the archetype of a watch by emphasizing its main purpose: time display.  The watch case has a diameter of 42mm and a thickness of about 13 mm and has no bezel. The time module is partly mounted inside sapphire glasses that are flush-mounted with the watch case. The exterior of the watch feels softm like a pebble.

Every professional has a point of view and develops appropriate evaluation criteria, whether the profession is watchmaker, mechanical engineer or banker. For example, a mechanical engineer is more likely to prioritize the mechanical aspect of a product. Confronted with a choice, he or she is likely to use parameters to evaluate and compare options. The mindset of an industrial designer is to adopt a methodology that guarantees a holistic approach, with the end user the ultimate evaluation criterion. An industrial designer will use a wide range of specifications to define the evaluation criteria. He will consider the mechanical aspect, viewing ergonomics and style as equals. Combining a wide range of parameters, finding synergies where others don’t in a dogma-free way are some of the values industrial designers add. The Ressence dial is the result of this holistic thinking method. The key concept behind Ressence is the notion that people can be trained to read its  dial faster than reading digits. The human brain has developed cognitive patterns that translate an image projected by the position of the hands into time conception. Reading time with hands has become a world knowledge heritage.
