François-Paul Journe seems to embody the idea of “auteur watchmaking” among Switzerland’s independent makers. Having learnt his trade in watch and clock restoration, he has developed a style rooted in classicism but nonetheless imbued with ingenuity. Journe seems to be in constant search for elegant, effective solutions to make his watches run more efficiently and accurately. He famously paired two balance wheels side by side, allowing the resonance phenomenon to improve their accuracy. A tourbillon with a remontoire spring for consistent power delivery, a perpetual calendar with instant date changes and a compact sonnerie with multiple safety mechanisms are all exhibits of Journe’s touch. Many of these functions have been emulated by other makers, but none of these have the breadth and originality of F.P. Journe.
