This sought after and highly collectible vintage two-tone 18 karat yellow gold and stainless steel Rolex Submariner boasts the rare “tropical” dial. Tropical dials are named after a specific paint finish that Rolex once used which caused dials on certain watch models to very slowly discolor over time, creating unusual colors and ombre effects. The name derives from the fact that conditions like high heat and humidity with sun exposure hasten the fading process; in other words, tropical weather. Interestingly, the finish that causes the fading was initially touted as a UV-protectant; Rolex was unaware of the ironic effect for many years due to the long time it takes for the discoloration to occur. Comes with a blue leather strap and a stainless steel and yellow gold oyster bracelet.
