The Tale of Two Trophies

The Tale of Two Trophies

The custom made trophies for the Swinging Skirts LPGA tournament were manufactured and designed by Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry in partnership with our Taiwanese counterparts.

Two Trophies One Tournament

The champion’s trophy is a round 15” solid sterling silver tray featuring a medallion engraved with the Swinging Skirts logo, wrapped in 18kt white gold and diamonds. The tournament trophy fabricated in glass measures 22” and mirrors the design of the champion’s. Additionally, it features an inset circular band of sterling silver where the name of each year’s winner will be engraved.

Trophy Design

Trophy artwork and design are particularly unique and aims to not only represent both cultures, but the relationship this tournament creates. Both cities are symbolized—the Golden Gate Bridge and the Taipei 101 building occupy the center of each trophy

Each trophy was manufactured locally, while the design teams debated final designs and layouts, the real questions quickly became material and manufacturing. The biggest challenge was the medium—previously SSFJ had only created trophies in silver. However, it was requested that the tournament trophy be created in glass. Kris, the designer for Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry explored options all over the globe, but as the deadline drew near it was clear we needed to produce something locally and quickly.

Kris was able to source a local glass company to sandblast and hand etch the intricate designs on to the trophy, while a local retired couple completed the beautiful scalloped edges. This type of sandblasting work is usually done with a photographic stencil, which we were able to use for the inner design. However, the outer design proved to be too large for this method, so the design was hand cut using sticky tape and laid on the trophy, sandblasted, and removed.

To create the finishing touches on the trophy the logo was engraved by hand and wrapped in diamonds. These trophies represent the cultural sprit of both groups involved in the tournament.
