Meet Stephen Silver
"Life is a never-ending treasure hunt," asserts Stephen H. Silver, chairman and CEO of Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry, one of the United States' premiere jewelry houses. For Silver, the chase is 99% of the fun. "Every day, I wake up with the burning desire to find something that intrigues me. I don't know if I'll buy it or sell it - but it's there, emblazoned in my memory with every other piece of treasure I've ever encountered."
He was first attracted to the pursuit of jewelry and fine collectibles by his mother's jeweler, who at the time was serving as chairman of the Board of Governors of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Upon obtaining a graduate degree in gemology from the GIA, Silver worked in Los Angeles grading and sorting diamonds for the first two years of his career, and learning a strict discipline that would serve him well throughout his career in the jewelry trade. But he hungered for a more creative outlet, which he found in his second and final job prior to founding the Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry, at a jeweler specializing in vintage pieces.
In vintage and estate jewelry, Silver discovered his true passion. He came in daily contact with a veritable museum of pieces, spanning Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco and modern periods. "Jewelry from the early 19th century to the mid 20th century particularly fascinates me," says Silver. "Gem sources were richer during this time, overhead was lower, creating more emphasis on craftsmanship and detail. Jewelers also took the time to train apprentices in the minutiae of quality control, design and execution of detail. The resulting pieces were exceedingly intricate, and all but impossible to recreate due to the lack of comparable materials and the high cost of resources and craftsmanship today."
Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry was established in 1980 to offer this exacting standard of old-world tradition to the modern marketplace. Silver is dedicated to apprenticing each and every employee in all aspects of the jewelry trade, and his staff, in turn, is dedicated to the transfer of this knowledge to Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry's clients.
Stephen Silver takes pride in his well-educated clientele, and he has fostered an extensive network of contacts to provide the very finest treasures to these discerning consumers. With this goal constantly top-of-mind, Silver has created a vertically integrated business, leveraging his highly developed global network of contacts in the jewelry trade, retail and wholesale divisions. This global network of industry associates enables the Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry to acquire almost any item, for any consumer, anywhere in the world.
"We deal only with jewelry of the highest quality," says Silver, "and our clients rely upon us to maintain the highest standards when the best is of utmost importance."
Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry, one of America's premiere jewelry houses, marries old world attention to detail with a cosmopolitan eye on the world. Akin to the artistic mastery of Leonardo DaVinci's own era, an apprentice-like environment is immediately noticeable in Stephen Silver's handpicked staff. They are experts, armed with knowledge, dedication, and a passion inherited from Mr. Silver.
In the glittering world of prestigious, ultra-high-end jewelry, Stephen Silver believes a key distinction sets his company apart from its well-known competitors. "We strive to give each client a personal, comfortable experience the moment they walk through our doors," says Silver. "We're not pretentious, we're not intimidating. We've worked to create an engaging, 'upstairs salon' atmosphere for our customers that allows them to feel secure in the confidentiality and exclusivity of their buying or selling experience."
Many collectors in search of beautiful jewelry have previously found themselves forced to the streets of New York City or even Europe. "We recognize that the treasure hunter doesn't need to live in Manhattan or even own a passport. At the Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry, virtually any item of fine vintage or modern jewelry, from $1000 to more than $1,000,000 in value, can be bought or sold", explains Silver. The company offers a unique, vertically integrated business operation with a highly developed global network of contacts in the jewelry trade, retail and wholesale divisions, which enables Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry to procure any treasure a client might desire.
The company's straightforward approach builds trust and confidence with clients. "When a potential buyer first looks at a piece of jewelry, we have gemological reports available and offer information on the item's provenance or history," Silver explains.
The Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry staff is intimately acquainted with each and every piece in the enterprise's selection of thousands of pieces. "We know market conditions at all times, and we are completely apprised of the innate value of every piece we sell." Stephen Silver insures that his staff remains at the vanguard of the jewelry trade by hiring only the most highly educated members of the trade, melding specialized backgrounds in all fields of gemology and jewelry with savvy business acumen. "Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry offers a special experience for our employees and for our clients," says Silver. "We encourage all of our team members to continually advance their education and training, and we also offer them the opportunity for extensive travel, which can be a valuable learning experience."
