When the first Richard Mille wristwatch appeared on the market in 2000, a scramble ensued in executive suites and development studios across the Swiss watch industry. Mille had unlocked a powerful design canvas that had lain hidden in plain sight for years. Mille had transformed the movement—from the shape of the parts to the various decorative finishes—into an ode to 21st century performance racing. He built these features, as well as the case itself, according to his personal vision regardless of difficulty or cost.

In the nearly two succeeding decades, Mille has maintained is prominence in watchmaking’s avant garde by relentlessly releasing new twists on complications, constructions and materials.  And while more people than ever before recognize a Richard Mille on the wrist, ownership remains a relatively exclusive club. Auto racing remains an important theme, but because Mille is able to draw off many sources of inspiration as a designer, there remains a constant source of novelty and variation in his relatively small production.
