"Life is a never-ending treasure hunt," asserts Stephen H. Silver, chairman and CEO of Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry, one of the United States' premiere jewelry houses. For Silver, the chase is 99% of the fun. "Every day, I wake up with the burning desire to find something that intrigues me. He was first attracted to the pursuit of jewelry and fine collectibles by his mother's jeweler, who at the time was serving as chairman of the Board of Governors of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Upon obtaining a graduate degree in gemology from the GIA, Silver worked in Los Angeles grading and sorting diamonds for the first two years of his career, and learning a strict discipline that would serve him well throughout his career in the jewelry trade. But he hungered for a more creative outlet, which he found in his second and final job prior to founding the Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry, at a jeweler specializing in vintage pieces.

In vintage and estate jewelry, Silver discovered his true passion. He came in daily contact with a veritable museum of pieces, spanning Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco and modern periods. "Jewelry from the early 19th century to the mid 20th century particularly fascinates me," says Silver. "Gem sources were richer during this time, overhead was lower, creating more emphasis on craftsmanship and detail. Jewelers also took the time to train apprentices in the minutiae of quality control, design and execution of detail. The resulting pieces were exceedingly intricate, and all but impossible to recreate due to the lack of comparable materials and the high cost of resources and craftsmanship today."
