The New Roger Dubuis Excalibur Monobalancier

Roger Dubuis Watch Stephen Silver

The New Roger Dubuis Excalibur Monobalancier is an All-White Summer Stunner

One of the more pleasant aspects of summertime is the license to wear slightly more unrestrained accessories. The white shoes and white belt lie waiting in our wardrobe for the warmer months. But neither of these come close to the attitude exuding from a white watch.

One of the best examples we have seen comes from the most unrestrained watch company in our stable, Roger Dubuis. The brand’s latest Excalibur Monobalancier has an enviable list of features: a skeleton automatic movement, rubber strap, and a case executed in a unique—and white—high-tech material.

Composite material, such as carbon fiber, has become widely used in the watch industry, as it is in other performance arenas such as motorsports and aerospace. In some applications, mineral fibers, such as quartz or basalt are starting to be used as a replacement for carbon due to their differing performance characteristics.

The Excalibur Monobalancier incorporates silica fibers into the composite material, which is formed into case, bezel, and crown components via a remarkably versatile sheet molding compound process, which enables the brand’s designers to create virtually any shape at will. The final parts are 2.5 times lighter than ceramic and 13 per cent lighter than SMC carbon.

Roger Dubuis specifically developed the material to remain stable and highly resistant to UV, artificial, and natural light, while the addition of pigments deepens its whiteness. To maintain the all-white aesthetic, a white rubber strap is the perfect accompaniment to complete the look of this truly striking watch, which is a perfect summer companion.

With such qualities, it might be easy to forget that this watch, like all the timepieces from the brand, bears the Geneva Seal. The skeleton movement, crafted with the brand’s signature star configuration is highly finished and provides excellent visual depth.

The micro-rotor has been specifically developed to be as efficient as a full-size rotor. Its construction ensures the watch winds perfectly to guarantee 60 hours of power reserve. This version of the Excalibur Monobalancier has been manufactured in a limited edition of 88 pieces for the world.
