Stephen Silver Launches Expansive Certified Pre-Owned Watch Division

“Our new pre-owned watch division may be the most exciting addition to our boutique since we started in the watch business,” says Jared Silver, “We have purposefully curated our offering to be as extraordinary as our jewelry and independent watch brands.” Over the last few years, pre-owned watches have become increasingly important to a growing slice of the watch collector community.  As more of these aficionados turn their attention to specific models from specific brands, their desires are likely to be met as much by watches already in the market as the latest novelties of the year. The Silvers have responded by combing both the global market as well as the vaults of local collectors to find watches that not only represent what is most desirable, but that also possess special qualities that put them on a higher level.

“Our inventory is quite varied,” offers Max Sotodeh, Stephen Silver’s director of retail. “Some of these watches come from brands we carry, like Urwerk and Laurent Ferrier. New pieces from these brands have become very hard to get and sometimes are sold before they make it into the case. Other pre-owned pieces come from a much wider variety of brands, which make exciting additions to our offering.”

Curating an attractive assortment of pre-owned timepieces that fit into the boutique’s orientation toward independent timepieces is very much an art. Naturally space has been made for some of the most coveted models in today’s watchmaking universe including Patek Philippe’s Aquanaut and the Royal Oak by Audemars Piguet. Other pieces have been included for special qualities that make them especially remarkable and collectible.

“We currently have an Omega Ploprof, a legendary diving watch that is now recognized as one of the high-points of late-1960s watch design,” adds Jared Silver. “We also have a pair of early Roger Dubuis Hommage models. Many watches like these have attracted followings from the collector community that actively pursue them.”

Among the more recently made pieces are watches that made a sensation for their design when launched. A ceramic pocket watch from Panerai presents an open-worked movement with a tourbillon spinning on a horizontal axis. An example of the highly limited Bugatti Supersport collection from Parmigiani Fleurier mounts the movement and dial at 90 degrees through a conical gear transmission. Boxes and papers for each watch may be available on a case-by-case basis.

“Having an active pre-owned department has added so much to our watch business,” says Jared Silver. “In today’s market, pre-owned is often the only realistic way to buy into certain brands. Other clients like the assurance of real-market valuations or the chance to buy a more important watch for the money. As a store operator, I love the opportunity to offer all these options to our clients and to have so many different, fascinating pieces available.”
